Story continuity guide

Keep promises, facts, and consequences in agreement.

A continuity system should help you answer a question during a scene, not become a second book you must maintain. Start with the facts that can change a character’s choices.

Connected story elements in The Lantern Archive example

Continuity has several layers: what is physically true, when events happen, what each character knows, and what the reader has been led to expect. Checking only names and dates misses the errors that change a plot.

01

Separate established facts from possibilities

Create a small record with three states: established, tentative, and deliberately changed. An idea on a planning board is not automatically canon. Record the scene or chapter that establishes each consequential fact.

For example, “Elara can enter the forgotten street” is incomplete. Add when she learns this, whether anyone witnesses it, and what prevents another character from doing the same. If the restriction changes, note which earlier scenes need revision. Keep a short list of affected passages rather than trusting your memory.

A useful continuity entry answers a question in one or two sentences. Avoid copying whole scenes into it: duplicated prose creates another version that can drift from the manuscript.

Record the condition and source of a rule, not only its name.

02

Track knowledge separately from chronology

Make one pass through events in world order. Then make another pass in chapter order, asking what each viewpoint character knows at that moment. A fact can be chronologically correct and still be revealed too early in dialogue.

For the Archive mystery, write down who has seen the missing ward, who has only heard a rumor, and which account each person believes. When a character acts on information, check the scene in which they acquired it.

In Scriptorum, timelines, profiles and labeled relationships can hold these references. They do not automatically detect contradictions; the check is still an editorial decision you make.

Audit promises at revision milestones

At the end of a draft, list the questions and expectations raised in the opening chapters. Mark each as answered, intentionally unresolved, or abandoned. Follow any abandoned promise back to the passage that created it and decide whether to pay it off or remove it.

After a structural revision, inspect the chapters immediately before and after every moved scene. Look for references to travel, injuries, possessions, time of day, and changes in trust. These local seams are often more revealing than rereading the whole book without a question.

Keep a dated backup before applying a continuity pass. Use a snapshot or review note for a disputed passage, and keep a clear distinction between the current text and an unresolved suggestion.

Check whether changed relationships affect earlier promises.
