Offline writing and backups
Keep control of the work—and a recoverable copy.
Local writing gives you control of the files. It also makes a deliberate backup habit essential. Separate the working project, recovery copies, and files you export to share.
Offline access and data protection are different questions. A book can open without the internet and still be lost if the only copy is on a failing drive. Build a small routine that covers both.
Prepare the machine before you disconnect
Install the Windows application, keep the purchase email and license key somewhere you can retrieve them, and complete initial activation while online. Open a test book, save it, close the application, and reopen it before relying on the setup while travelling.
In Scriptorum, normal planning, writing and export work offline after activation. Internet is still needed for purchase, downloads, activation and updates. A new computer or reinstallation may require online setup again.
Check the actual save location in Preferences. Do not assume a shortcut, installer download, or exported chapter is your working book vault. Knowing where the library lives is the first step in protecting it.

Make dated backups of the actual working data
Save and close Scriptorum before making a manual copy. Copy scriptorum-library.json from the active save location to a dated backup location, keeping the original untouched. Follow the current Support instructions rather than moving or overwriting an unfamiliar library.
Keep more than one recovery point and a copy on a different device or storage medium. A cloud-synchronized folder can be a chosen part of your system, but synchronization is not the same as a versioned backup: a bad change can synchronize too.
Automatic save protects recent edits during ordinary use; it does not replace independent backups. Likewise, a chapter snapshot helps undo a local revision but should not be your only protection against losing the whole storage device.

Check that recovery works before you need it
Periodically verify a backup by following the documented restore/open-existing-library process without replacing your only working copy. Confirm that the expected vault, recent chapters, and references are present. An untested backup is a hope, not demonstrated recovery.
Export useful milestone copies as DOCX, PDF, or EPUB for their intended purpose, but keep the book data too. An export is not a full substitute for boards, profiles, relationships and revision information stored in the project.
If the application appears empty after an update or a storage change, stop before creating or overwriting data. Inspect the edition-specific storage settings and existing library first, then contact support if necessary. This is safer than assuming the book has disappeared and migrating blindly.

Keep exports as useful handoff files, alongside backups of the actual vault.
