Novel outlining software
Find the shape of the book without locking it too soon.
Use a visual outline when order is still uncertain, then draft in chapters with optional scenes. Your planning and prose belong to the same book vault.
An outline is a working model of the story, not a contract. A useful tool lets you test a different sequence without losing the questions and motives behind it.
Begin with the scenes you can see
Create scene or note cards for moments you already know, then move them into a tentative reading order. Add questions where the connection between scenes is missing. Nested boards can hold a difficult sequence or research that would crowd the main outline.
A planning card does not automatically become a manuscript scene. Keep the outline as your thinking surface and write the prose in the manuscript editor. This gives each kind of work its own space.
Inside The Lantern Archive
Arrange the opening mystery and the questions it creates.
Check cause, pressure, and consequence
Before adding another beat, ask what changed in the preceding scene. A revelation should affect the next choice; an obstacle should require a new action. Place related cards beside one another while you test that chain.
Use character profiles and relationship maps to keep motivations available. Timelines can help you inspect the order of events, while the chapter sequence controls the order of the actual draft.
Inside The Lantern Archive
Compare event order with what the reader learns.
Turn a working outline into a draft
Create manuscript chapters and add scenes only when they help. You can read the whole draft continuously or work on an individual chapter or scene. Keep the outline nearby as a reference rather than repeatedly copying the whole plan into new documents.
Export the ordered manuscript as DOCX, PDF, or EPUB 3 for the next stage. Keep original imports and review your output instead of assuming every document layout transfers unchanged.
Inside The Lantern Archive
Write prose in chapters, using scenes only when useful.
